One of my favorite ways to jazz up a basic outfit is with a statement necklace. Solid tee? Regular. Solid tee paired with an eye-catching neck piece? Heck yes.

I mean, you can certainly spend beaucoup bucks on an exquisite statement piece…and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. However, I have found that sometimes with statement necklaces, the styles can change with the seasons. The bubble necklace that was all the rage last season may be on the way out a few short months later. So, if you’re going to go for a trendy style in a statement necklace, sometimes spending lots of cash is not a priority.

Just because you want to make a statement doesn’t mean you need to see a huge dent in your bank account. It almost sounds too good to be true, but I promise you: it’s for real. Every single one of the 20 necklaces I rounded up for you today rings in at $25 or less. Yes – you read that correctly – statement necklaces for an affordable price! Pinch me. I pretty much want to add every single one of these to my collection, but I’m REALLY excited about one of my newest jewelry website finds: Jeweliq. All of the jewelry on their site is $25 or less. Be still, my bargain shopping heart. Make sure you check it out for yourself.

So – which statement necklace would you select from the bunch?

Sometimes, it isn’t all about mixing bright colors in an outfit. Why not do it with neutrals too?

Black, white, brown, and tan can all pair together wonderfully, so I decided to embrace that with an outfit. When I spotted this patterned tank at Target last week, I knew it would be a great addition to my closet. The flowy fabric of the top is keeping me cool in the over 90° weather we are currently experiencing.

And because pants were definitely out of the question (I’m not sure that I’ll be wearing a pair for quite some time), it was time to break out some tuxedo shorts in their place. My jeans have officially been put into retirement for the summer. I might see them again in September or October. Am I the only one out there that can’t stand wearing jeans in hot weather? I just…can’t do it!

So, about a year ago I accidentally forgot to “skip” a month on my ShoeMint account. Bad me, bad me. I have had a credit sitting in my account for so long, but no shoes were coming up that I just HAD to have. Then, I realized that for a limited time you can use your credits across the different Mint lines. My problem was immediately solved. I scored three necklaces in exchange for my ShoeMint credit over at JewelMint. Two of the three necklaces have arrived so far, and this Scene Stealer Necklace is one of them. I am in LOVE with it. Plus – the price tag on it was $29.99 – not too bad! JewelMint offers a number of discount codes on the site: I was able to snag two pieces for the price of one since it was my first purchase. Consider signing up if you like jewelry – you’re able to skip months and not be charged if you see the new offerings and aren’t interested. Just make sure you keep on top of it in your calendar if you do!

Black and white printed tank: Target // Black tuxedo shorts: J.Crew (last year’s style – similar at Express) // Sunglasses: Ray-Ban New Wayfarers // Scene Stealer Necklace: JewelMint // Animal print heels: Carol – ShoeMint (most sizes are sold out, but I found them on Amazon and Heels.com) // Handbag: Dre Hartmann Cameron Hobo (camera bag)

Happy Father’s Day – I hope all of you out there are able to spend some time today celebrating the fathers in your lives. It comes as no surprise that the group at Sunday Supper is taking the day to create some dishes in honor of the holiday!

As much as I’d like to whip up some steaks or other “manly” meals for Father’s Day, there is another dish that I thought I’d share with my dad – some stuffed peppers! Even though they’re filled with lean ground turkey breast, beans, and veggies, they are definitely filling.

When I make these peppers for our family, we usually utilize a combination of peppers. The green bell peppers are great for my mom and Justin, but my dad and I usually opt for poblano peppers – the two of us definitely enjoy spicy food, and we love the kick of smoky heat from the poblanos in the dish.

The peppers in our garden are JUST now starting to emerge, and I know that these stuffed peppers are going to be in our future as soon as my bell peppers and poblanos (hopefully) grow to full size! Patience, I say…it’s hard though…

Do you enjoy stuffed peppers? Any favorite ingredients you add at home?

Turkey Stuffed Peppers

Ingredients

4-5 green bell peppers (or poblano peppers)

1 lb ground turkey breast

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp olive oil

1 cup corn kernels (I use frozen, but fresh also work)

1 14.5oz can black eyed peas (or black beans, etc.), rinsed and drained

1/2 pint cherry tomatoes, diced (or one 14.5oz can diced tomatoes, drained)

1/2 red onion, diced

2 tbsp cumin

1 tbsp chili powder

1 jalapeno, diced (optional)

Juice from 1/2 a lime

Panela cheese, crumbled

Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 450° F. Line a baking pan with tin foil. Rinse/clean the bell peppers (or poblanos) and space evenly apart on the baking sheet. Place in preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes, rotating peppers every 5 minutes until they are roasted on all sides. Alternately, you can grill the bell peppers as well. Remove peppers from oven and set aside to allow them to cool.

2. Meanwhile, in a deep, large skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium high heat. Add red onion and minced garlic and saute for 2-3 minutes until onion is tender. Add ground turkey breast to the pan with the garlic and onions; break it up with a spatula into small pieces. Saute turkey until almost completely cooked through – about 5-6 minutes.

3. Add the corn kernels, black eyed peas, tomatoes, jalapeno, cumin, and chili powder to the turkey mixture. Stir to combine, and heat through for about 2-3 minutes. Remove pan from heat and add the lime juice, stirring gently to incorporate.

4. When the bell peppers have cooled, use a sharp knife to slice off the tops about an inch below the stem. Gently scrape out the seeds and ribs from the peppers, and stand the bottoms in a baking dish.

5. Adjust your oven temperature to 375° F. Carefully scoop a generous amount of the turkey mixture into the bottom of each pepper (I like mine to overflow slightly with filling). I typically make 4 peppers and have some filling left over – perfect to top a salad with or stuff inside tacos as another meal! Sprinkle crumbled panela cheese (or other cheese of your choosing) on top of the filling, then place the tops on each pepper. Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes, until the peppers are heated through and the cheese is melty. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves. Enjoy!!!

Have you ever heard of a Dishcrawl before? In a nutshell, consider it a bar crawl, but with food instead! Attendees meet at a particular restaurant location, are treated to a sampling of dishes, and then move on to 3 more locations throughout the evening. It’s a fun event for friends or couples, and a great way to get introduced to different restaurants in a particular area. On Tuesday, Justin and I attended the first Dishcrawl held in Dunedin.

Our Dischcrawl began at The Dunedin Smokehouse, and it kicked the night off on a great note. Our plate arrived featuring a jumbo smoked chicken wing, a slow-smoked St. Louis rib, and a cup of smoked gouda macaroni and cheese. I have to say, I quite enjoyed the rich and creamy mac and cheese, especially with the crunch of the corn, bell pepper, and onion on top.

The second stop on our crawl was Casa Tina for some Mexican cuisine. We were presented with a mini margarita and chips and salsa to start.

Then, our plates were filled with three items: guacamole (yum), mole poblano, and chiles en nogada (poblano pepper with picadillo, a brandy walnut cream sauce, and pomegranate).

Third on the crawl was Jolli Mons Grill. Our group was presented with spring rolls and quesadillas.

Last, but not least, our final Dishcrawl stop was at Dunedin Brewery, where a very generous portion of food was offered. It included Dunedin Brewery wings, a crunchy fish taco, and a pulled pork slider.

I also couldn’t resist and had to order a glass of their local honey brew – it is a limited edition release, once a year in May. The beer is brewed with 100% Florida honey, and I have to say it was extremely delicious…this is coming from someone who does not usually drink beer. Plus, don’t you love the glass it comes in?

All in all, going on a Dishcrawl was a fun experience – we got to try out a few local establishments, ate a variety of food, and spent some time with others! Make sure to check out Dischcrawl’s website and see if they offer them in your area!

~~~~~
And if you aren’t already full after seeing the food from our Dishcrawl, how about some more?
What do you do when your blogging buddy happens to share the exact same birthday as you? You get together for some foodie fun, that’s what!
What are the odds that my friend Megan from I Run For Wine and I actually share the same birth date? Not a day apart, not the same week…the same day! Our friendship was meant to be. Anyway, we got together with a few of our friends on Thursday night at Besa Grill to celebrate and enjoy some delicious eats!
Of course, we had to start out with some cocktails. The Guava Habanero margarita (pictured top right) was a popular selection at the table, with good reason. It is sweet and spicy in a glorious combination. And when I say it is spicy, I really do mean it – there’s a nice amount of heat with the habanero pepper infused simple syrup (made in house). Yum! Also enjoyed around the table were the Cactus Pear Margarita (top left), the classic Besa Margarita (bottom left), and the Blueberry Ginger Mojito.
Next, our table was topped with plates of fresh ceviche (gorgeous presentation, right?), and trios of guacamole (traditional, goat and blue cheese, and black bean and corn).
We also had a sampling of their awesome flatbreads, including the chicken and brie – my personal favorite (top left), the Havana Cuban (top right), the roasted tomato (bottom left), and the smoked salmon (bottom right).
We thoroughly enjoyed the next two dishes – the avocado caprese salad (I think I need to make my own version at home!), and the duck nachos. The duck nachos were received enthusiastically by the group – they featured roasted duck, black bean corn salsa, machego cheese, avocado crema, all on top of wonton chips. Definitely an indulgent flavor explosion.
I could barely think about eating another bite when an assortment of tacos arrived on the table. Chicken tacos, steak tacos, fish tacos, and shrimp tacos were enjoyed by all, and I think I need to get myself some of these taco shell holders for my home, don’t you think?
And of course, it wouldn’t be a birthday without some dessert, right? Even though we were all stuffed to the gills at that point, we managed to consume some sweets, from the Seven Sins Cake to the Creme Brulee Flight, to the Fried Banana Cheesecake with dulce de leche ice cream. Drool. It was a great evening spent with friends, and I thank Besa Grill for hosting our group!
Have you had any great eats at local spots lately?
I hope not, because today I have an assortment of elephant jewelry and accessories to share with you. If wearing a large bib necklace isn’t your style, perhaps one of these daintier elephant pendant necklaces would be up your alley? Maybe a bejeweled elephant bangle or some stud earrings? I have to say: I’m particularly fond of the teapot and mugs pictured below…and I would totally water my garden with that elephant shaped watering can! Seriously – how cute is that?
As the warm summer months approach, it is time to break out some beachy cocktails to get in the spirit! Malibu recently released a brand new rum to their collection – Malibu Island Spiced! If you’re already a fan of Malibu’s coconut rum, Island Spiced should be right up your alley. It features a bolder taste of Caribbean rum and is infused with coconut, vanilla, and a hint of cinnamon. There is another aspect of this rum that has me doing a happy dance. Malibu Island Spiced uses Truvia® all natural sweetener, which makes each serving clock in at only 70 calories. Full flavor and reduced calories? Count me in. To get in the island spirit alongside my Malibu Island Spiced rum, I decided to make a flavorful and fresh dinner to enjoy for a fun night in: stuffed peppers! Green peppers are filled to the brim with a mixture of ground chicken breast, black eyed peas, tomatoes, corn, and a sprinkle of panela cheese (with some fresh guacamole on the side). The peppers are not only a fun presentation to look at, but are also easy on the waist line. Plus, the bright flavors of the dinner pair perfectly with the bold taste of the Malibu Island Spiced. I also chose to set the table outside on our patio instead of in our normal dining room – dining al fresco always puts me in the summer mood! And enjoying these cocktails definitely screams “summer” to me! So, how about some ideas for serving Malibu Island Spiced? I sampled three different cocktails, and each offered a completely different flavor experience. First – Spiced on Ice. This concoction is simply Malibu Island Spiced on top of crushed ice with a twist of orange. The rum itself packs more than enough punch to stand on its own – if you want to experience all of the flavors, this is the way to go. For me, the cinnamon and vanilla definitely comes out with this drink option. If you prefer your rum with a mixer, another simple option that also brings out the flavors of the Malibu Island Spiced is the Sparkling Spiced. This cocktail is 1 1/2 parts Malibu Island Spiced and 3 parts soda water, garnished with an orange wedge. The soda water adds some bubbly fun to the drink, but doesn’t overpower the flavors of the rum. And, if you are like me, you’ll be a big fan of the Malibu Spiced and Diet Cola, which is 1 1/2 parts Malibu Island Spiced with 3 parts diet cola, garnished with lime. Rum and cola is one of my favorite drink combinations, and this cocktail brings a new dimension of flavor to the party. Paired with my stuffed peppers, it was perfection! I can’t wait to test out some other flavorful libations using the Malibu Island Spiced – utilizing some fruit juices is definitely something I plan to do. Now I just need to decide where to start!
Two weeks ago I was walking through Dillards as I traversed the mall. As I sauntered through the main aisle, my eyes landed on what had to be one of the largest, most random necklaces I’d ever seen. It was an enormous elephant head pendant on a gold chain, and as soon as I saw it I knew it had to be mine. Mine, mine, mine!
And as strange as a huge elephant head pendant may seem to be (believe me, I questioned myself about the purchase for a bit, but I was so incredibly drawn to it I didn’t have much of a choice), I’ve actually found a lot of outfits to wear it with so far. It’s such a statement, and I’m totally loving it. Plus, it was only $25, so it didn’t set me back all that much. I know it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but in the 3 times I’ve worn it I have been stopped by so many people…inquiring where I got it because they like it too. Who would have thought?
Anyway, I thought my elephant bib necklace would pair well with this awesome black and white striped dress I snagged the other day at Marshalls…for $20. I love how the stripes travel in different directions across the top and bottom of the dress – it’s a good visual, and the fit is classic yet fun. Plus, black and white is all the rage right about now – embracing that particular trend is something I have no problem with!
Striped dress: Monteau, purchased at Marshalls (same brand, similar dress here) // Elephant Bib Necklace: Ana & Ava, Dillards // Black envelope clutch: ASOS (similar also at ASOS) // Wedges: Coconuts, purchased 2 years ago at Marshalls (similar at Zappos)
It’s no secret: I live in Florida, and I am pretty much wearing attire that shows my skin in some way 24/7. And, with the warm months now in full swing, that rings true even more so! My razor pretty much goes into overdrive during this season…from donning shorts, to skirts, to dresses, to tank tops, to bathing suits! Since my razor gets daily use, having one with smoothing power is absolutely essential.
Sometimes, you just have to upgrade things in your life. I always say that there are worthy splurges out there, and the Schick Hydro Silk® razor is certainly one of them. I love the hydrating strips surrounding the razor blades – my legs don’t feel dry immediately after use, and they really help the razor to glide across your skin. The moisturizer is a water activated serum, and it hydrates for up to 2 hours after a shave. I definitely do not fear nicks and cuts with the Schick Hydro Silk® either! There are five curve-sensing blades on this razor, which allows for an incredibly close shave. And the unique skin guards smooth your skin while helping to avoid irritation. Plus, can we talk about how pretty of a color mine is? I always appreciate a bit of turquoise in my life… Making exciting upgrades can happen in more than one area, of course! I was inspired to upgrade another aspect of my life with a new addition to my kitchen. I wanted to make a batch of cookies, but I thought I could use an upgrade from the basic chocolate chip variety I typically whip up. Instead, I decided to make macaroons! If you have not tried a macaroon before, they are a revelation. The crunchy meringue cookie surrounds the outside…the creamy filling is soft inside…it’s a sandwich cookie I dream about. However, the ingredients to make a batch of these tiny cookies is not exactly cheap. A small bag of almond meal/flour runs about $12, so by the time you source the rest of the ingredients for your treats, they do end up costing a bit more than average. But like I said – sometimes an upgrade is worth the splurge! And I didn’t stop with the upgrades for just the cookie portion of the macaroon…I decided to make my own buttercream frosting instead of buying it pre-made from the store. Fresh buttercream frosting? So much better than frosting in a can! In the end, I would say it was a worthy upgrade! I love a classic chocolate chip cookie, but there is something so FANCY and decadent about a macaron. They’re a delicate and luxurious bite of goodness. Schick Hydro Silk® razor is annoucing their Razorvention™ Revamp.
I’m back with another wine! It’s Friday, after all!
Today’s wine is (again) a white wine, but it’s a bit of a departure from the Sauvignon Blancs I’ve been sipping on recently. I’m talking about the Radius 2011 Chardonnay. It is 100% Chardonnay from Washington state.
I’ll be completely honest: sometimes Chardonnay scares me. I won’t blindly order a glass without knowing more about the potential flavor profile. I’m not a huge fan of oak or buttery flavor in my wine: just a taste preference of mine! And that is what surprised me about this wine: it actually has flavors of toasted oak, yet I still found myself sipping a second glass. It has rich flavors (think apples, almonds, and spice), but a clean finish, which is what I think I liked most about it. The oak notes (to me) were subtle enough to make them pleasant even to my palate. I was very surprised (in a good way) by how much I enjoyed this wine. Would it be my first pick in the future? Probably not, but I think it was nice to switch things up a bit!
You can pick up a bottle of Radius 2011 Chardonnay at Total Wine for $10.99 – not a bad price!
Cheers – what is in your glass this weekend?
I’ve already contemplated what to wear to the beach (and actually picked up an awesome ruched one piece suit at Marshalls the other day – score!), but that isn’t the only element to consider. How about some beach totes and towels? You can’t forget those essentials!
Today I wanted to round up a collection of tote bags and towels…perfect for the pool or the beach! Every gal needs to get out in the sun in style, am I right? No boring bags to pack your towel, sunscreen, and books in!
