Do you love your hair?

That is the question I want you to answer. Do you embrace your hair for its texture, its color, its length, its style? All too often, I think it is easy to complain about our hair. I’m guilty of it as well – my fine/thin locks don’t like to hold a curl, and styling isn’t quite as “fun” as it could be if I happened to have some curl or volume. But, oh, how having a “good hair day” can transform my confidence level! Yes, the weather can play a part in that, but the products that I use with my hair also contribute.

ULTA Beauty’s Love Your Hair event is a 21-day celebration of hair, from May 12 through June 1 at ULTA Beauty. If you visit your local store, you can get involved with hair demos, prizes, and daily Beauty Steals™ – special offers on hair care products and tools. Some of these awesome events include free Redken Diamond Oil 5 Carat Finish with an appointment on 5/22 or 5/23, and Your Best Waves and Curls with Bed Head and Hot Tools on 5/14 from 4-8pm.

Now, I know I talk a lot about finding affordable style, but there are also times when splurging a bit is absolutely worth it. I wholeheartedly believe that is the case with your hair. Taking care of your locks with the proper products can not only make your hair look great, but can extend the time you need between salon visits. So, spending a little more money on your at-home hair care can actually save you money in the long run! Plus, having a good hair day every day isn’t such an awful thought, is it?

I was lucky enough to test out a number of ULTA Beauty’s hair products at home, and I have a hard time picking out what my favorites were. A few did stand out, however. First, let’s talk about shampoo and conditioner. Now, with my straight hair, it is very easy to notice when my hair shines vs. when it looks dull. I always like to bump up the shine factor when possible, and I was absolutely blown away when I tried Sebastian’s Trilliance Shampoo and Conditioner. I could tell the difference in an instant when I dried my hair after my shower.

For upping the shine factor and smoothness in your hair, the Orofluido Beauty Elixir is such a great product. I have been pouring a small amount on the tips of my fingers and working it onto the ends of my hair when it is damp. It definitely smooths out all of those out-of-place hairs and helps mask split ends if you have any. The bottle is generously sized, so it will last quite a while!

Next up: the Sexy Hair Root Pump. I have actually used this product for years, and it is one of my all- time favorites. It is a spray mousse that you pump directly into the roots of your hair (as opposed to dispensing in your hands like other mousse products), and it really does pump your hair up with awesome volume. Side note: I really love the Root Pump Plus Humidity Resistant version…for those of us who live in humid climates like Florida, you know how much a product like that is necessary! And speaking of humidity resistance, the NEW Sexy Hair Weather Proof Humidity Resistant Spray was probably my favorite find for my hair. I’m officially obsessed. It is a finishing spray that shields your hair from humid conditions, and I know that it will become a regular in rotation once the humid summer season rolls around. Get it – this one is definitely worth the splurge to keep your hairstyle fresh throughout the day!

With ULTA Beauty’s Hair Pledge, they are encouraging women to pledge to love the hair they have for the chance to win free blowouts for the rest of the year. All you have to do is tweet your hair pledge with the hashtag #ULTAHairPledge to be entered. And, I’m sure you’d like to spend $100 in your nearest ULTA store (or online) – so make sure you answer this question to for a chance to win a gift card (and read the sweepstakes rules below):

I woke up bright and early on Saturday morning to attend quite a spectacular event. Nordstrom was throwing their spring/summer beauty trend show, and I was fortunate enough to be in attendance. My lovely friend Megan and I decided to forgo sleeping in on a Saturday to learn about the best in beauty.

Nordstrom really rolls out the red carpet (or should I say: white) for this event. Ladies milled in the Nordstrom entryway before the main doors opened: filling their tote bags with samples and learning about new products and techniques. When the time came to be led up to the Trend Show main event, we were paraded through the store, which had been transformed into a beauty mecca.

The seats for the Beauty Trend Show filled quickly, and even though it was before 8am, you could sense the excitement. I had never attended one of these events before, so I was very excited to see what was in store! And…surprise surprise…I left longing for many more beauty products, and some new wardrobe items as well. Leave it to Nordstrom to bring the awesome.

It would take oh so long to go over every single brand that had a new product to present at the show, but there were some notable standouts for me. Vincent Longo was in town for this event, showing off some of his line and then teaching technique classes throughout the day. How cool is that? I especially liked the idea of his Water Canvas blush. It is created to mimic the flush and glow of natural skin. The formula itself is made to moisturize the skin as well. By the way – how gorgeous is that dress the model is wearing?!?! It’s by Tracy Reese, and definitely out of my price range, but oh my goodness how I adore it!

And can we talk about the style? Of course, Nordstrom would pair up their beauty items with gorgeous pieces of clothing. There were some notable pieces I spotted on some of the models as well. Although almost every item is out of my price range, a lot of inspiration struck for me, and perhaps I’ll be recreating some of these looks on my own this season!

Here are the details – clockwise from top left photo: Vince Camuto beige sequin top, Collective Concepts mint green bird print skirt, and Cara statement necklace // Milly grey sequin jacket, Diane Von Furstenberg print top, Joie mint green shorts, Vince Camuto Nedra sandals // Ted Baker orange dress // Willow & Clay ivory tweed jacket, Joie black leopard print tank, Milly black leather shorts, and Penny Loves Kenny Ronny pumps // Parker white print blazer, Astr black dress, and Tildon Risa pumps // Ted Baker striped dress

I really thought this model’s hair was the most beautiful color. Am I right???

A new-to-me beauty brand that was presented at the Trend Show was Chantecaille. They use high concentrations of natural botanicals in their products. And another thing I love: they give back. They select different animals and causes to protect/preserve each season and donate a percentage of their proceeds (you can read more about it here). How can you not love that? This season, their Save the Sharks Palette is not only a gorgeous color combination, but a percentage of the proceeds benefit BLOOM’s commitment to ban shark finning.

Some of the presenters even got the audience involved. That was true with Miracle Skin Transformer. Again, this was a new-to-me brand, and I was very impressed. Megan and I had the pleasure of trying out some of their Miracle Skin Transformer for the face: a 5-in-1 tinted skin enhancer. It literally made our skin look airbrushed, but it is extremely light and essentially just like applying a moisturizer. I wouldn’t be surprised if I find a bottle of the transformer added to my collection very soon…

Have you heard of Living Proof? It’s a company co-owned by Jennifer Aniston, and they have a cool line of hair care products. They work with biotech scientists from MIT to develop the products that will provide “proof” in a bottle instead of just hope. Their AMP instant texture volumizer was such a great product to test out. I was impressed by how the product did not feel heavy in my hair, which is a problem for gals like me with fine/thin locks. I also could not help but purchase the Living Proof Restore Recovery Regimen. It’s a 4 week regimen for anti damage and restoring (however, the current regimen includes 5 ampules – 5 weeks!). Plus, I was told that for someone like me with shorter/fine hair, there is enough product in each ampule for two uses…so for me this set will last 10 weeks. You simply apply it instead of conditioner once a week, leave it in for 5 minutes, and rinse it out. Both me and Megan purchased a regimen, and I plan on documenting how it works on my hair!

When the trend show was complete, it was time to head downstairs and experience some of these beauty products for ourselves! Megan and I were lucky enough to sit with Rojelio Reyna of Bobbi Brown cosmetics. He really emphasized the philosophy Bobbi lives by: every woman is beautiful. I love the concept that a woman doesn’t need to change the way she looks to be beautiful – she already is, and just taking a small step or two can enhance it. We also paged through Bobbi’s makeup manual – Pretty Powerful. The range of women pictured and their stories are truly awesome – you should definitely check it out if you get the chance!

We did learn a fun new trick when Megan’s makeup was being applied. Rojelio drew gel eyeliner not above her lashes but BELOW. I’d never heard of doing such a thing, but the technique absolutely made her eyes pop. So cool!

All in all, the Beauty Trend Show was an absolutely fabulous way to spend my Saturday, and I’m already looking forward to seeing the fall/winter installment! Thank you so much to Nordstrom for giving me the heads up about the event; I am so glad I didn’t miss out on such a fantastic day!

Tell me: what is your go-to beauty product? Have you ever attended a beauty event like this one?

Some of the default nail hues I love to paint on are silvers, golds, and other metallics. There is something fun and bold yet still subdued about them!

I think Trixie by Zoya is on the bold end of the spectrum. I am really really digging it! Trixie is a light silver in color, but the metallic quality of it is almost foil-like. It’s chic, but still has edge, depending on how you wear it! I like the eye catching nature of the color, without being too over the top!

And again, I’ll say it: Zoya polishes have SUCH lasting power! For the photos above: I was lazy and didn’t use a base coat this time around…just two coats of Trixie and a clear top coat. On Friday. So, today is day 4 and there are still no chips. You’ve got to love that!

~~~~~
If you’re looking for some more silver metallic nail polishes, never fear: I’ve rounded up quite a handful (haha…see what I did there?)! Do you have some silver paint pots in your collection?
Happy Friday everyone!
It’s been a little while since I added a new nail polish to my collection. However, when Zoya recently ran a promotion (three free polishes…just pay shipping!) I could not pass it up. One of the three polish colors I selected was Cassi:
Cassi is a really pretty peachy pink nail polish. It has coral tones included as well, which is oh so gorgeous! I have a lot of different pink polishes in my collection, but Cassi is unlike all of the others. I know it will be a regular in my manicure rotation now!
I’ve become a really big fan of Zoya nail polishes for the past year or so. They are formaldehyde free and vegan friendly, which is awesome. And what is even better? The quality. The polish itself is thin in texture, so it spreads over your nail like a breeze! It is also extremely long lasting. Check this out: the pictures above were taken last week Tuesday. Today is day TEN of this manicure…and let me share a picture of my nails from right this minute:
Yes, you can see where the nail is growing out, but do you see any chips? No siree. I used a base coat polish followed by two coats of Cassi, and this manicure has literally stood the test of time. This polish is worth every penny, my friends.
So, if you don’t already have some Zoya nail polish in your collection, I definitely suggest you consider it!
Do you own any Zoya nail polishes? What is your favorite color?
Most of the time, the clothing and beauty products I share are of the affordable variety. I do believe that you don’t have to break the bank when it comes to style and beauty.
HOWEVER, there are some times when I think a girl has to splurge. When I splurge on a beauty product, I don’t take it lightly. Over the past six months, I have started using a few new makeup products that I now fully believe are 100% worth each and every penny. Sometimes, the splurge is totally worth it. Let me tell you what they are and why I love them (and why you need to get your hands on these products ASAP):
Dior ‘Rosy Glow – Petal’ Awakening Blush: $44 at Nordstrom. I realize that price tag seems pretty high for blush. It is. I cringed a little when I handed over my credit card. However, this blush is the best I’ve ever used. The shade is supposed to be universally flattering for all faces because of the technology involved. You see, the shade of the blush adjusts according to your skin’s moisture! It is the PERFECT rosy glow for your face. What is great is that this blush glides effortlessly onto my blush brush – I don’t need to drag it around many times to pick up the product. This blush is really going to last a long time, so in my opinion, it is SO worth the splurge.
Urban Decay Pore Perfecting Primer: $31 at Sephora. I received a small sample bottle of this when I made a purchase at Sephora, and once I used it a few times I was hooked and splurged on the full size tube. This primer reduces the appearance of pores and fine lines. Another feature that I love is that the primer applies to a matte finish on your face. It is not greasy whatsoever. If you have oily or combination skin, this could be the perfect primer for you (although if you have dry skin I am sure it would be fabulous as well). Urban Decay also offers a Brightening and Tightening Complexion Primer if that is more up your alley. I’ve been using my full size tube of primer since September, and at this point I am MAYBE halfway through. Worth the splurge, 100%.
Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray: $29 at Sephora. This stuff is SO COOL! It is a hypoallergenic makeup setting spray in a mist bottle. I’m sure some of you out there can relate: after a few hours of wearing makeup, sometimes you can feel it getting less than fresh…a little melted…a little streaky…all that horrible stuff. Not with a few sprays of this makeup setting spray! I mist 2-3 pumps across my face after my makeup is applied in the morning, and it seriously lasts ALL DAY. I even tested this at the beach over the summer: I sat out at the beach in almost 100 degree heat for over an hour and my mom even commented on how fresh my face looked at the end of it (note: I don’t normally wear a face full of makeup to the beach: I just wanted to test out the product in an extreme condition). This is great for everyday wear, and especially great for special occasions when you want to make sure your makeup is long lasting. AND – it is vegan and cruelty-free! You have to love that.
So tell me: what beauty buys do you make that are totally worth the splurge?
Every once in a while, a company comes around that offers amazing products across the board.
I was lucky enough to receive a box filled with some of Mary Kay’s best selling products, as well as some of their brand new ones! I couldn’t wait to get my hands on them, and I quickly found myself incorporating each product into my daily makeup routine.
Let’s begin with the Mary Kay® TimeWise Microdermabrasion Set. It contains two products: the “refine” and the “replenish.” I must say: I haven’t used microdermabrasion products before, but I have been enjoying Mary Kay’s! The “refine” is applied after you wash your face; you gently scrub it on your face. The microscopic exfoliators energize and smooth the skin but aren’t overly rough. I can definitely sense how smooth my skin feels after applying it. The “replenish” is a serum applied after the “refine,” and it contains vitamins, antioxidants, and anti-irritants. The serum nourishes the newly soft, smooth skin. If you’re looking for a microdermabrasion system, I definitely can say I enjoy this one. I have relatively sensitive skin, and I have not experienced irritation after using it (one to two times a week).
Next up: mascara! Mascara is probably the one makeup item (aside from foundation) that I absolutely, 100% cannot live without. I am extremely picky when it comes to mascara, and I was excited to try out Mary Kay’s Lash Primer, Ultimate Mascara™, and Lash Love Mascara™.
The Mary Kay Lash Primer provides a great base for your eyelashes. It strengthens and helps condition them, and also allows them to lift and stay curled for longer. The primer goes on clear and is very lightweight!
The Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara™ in Black is Mary Kay’s most voluminous formula. The design of the brush really does lend to lengthening – the center of the brush is the widest part, and the bristles taper down on both ends. My thin and wispy lashes really take to this mascara for everyday wear; they look fluffy, soft, and long!
My favorite mascara product of the bunch is Mary Kay’s Lash Love™ Mascara in Black. Not only does this mascara give lashes volume but it also provides definition. The brush itself is flexible, which really allows you to reach each and every lash. This mascara is perfect for an evening out when you want your lashes to make a statement! Va-va-voom!
A girl can’t have too many lip glosses, can she? Mary Kay® NouriShine Plus™ Lip Gloss in Mango Tango and Café Au Lait were two great ones to try. As bright as the Mango Tango gloss (pictured on the left) appears in the tube, it only gives a slight mango red sheen to your lips when it is applied. It’s a nice little pop! I really love the Café Au Lait shade; it is a great neutral lip color, and I find myself carrying it around in my handbag with me every day to swipe on.
The Mary Kay Compact Mini is oh so convenient! It is a refillable magnetic compact that holds your beauty must-haves. You can customize the compact by filling it with three mineral eye colors and a Mary Kay Cheek Color; the magnets easily snap into place and stay put. There is also a hidden compartment on the bottom of the compact where you can store some mini-brushes! I’m all about convenience, and I really appreciate the design of this compact.
Mary Kay’s Mineral Cheek Color in Shy Blush is such a pretty shade of petal pink; I incorporate it into my makeup routine daily! The cheek color applies smoothly and evenly, providing just the right amount of flush for the cheeks in the daytime! It’s great for the gal who loves a natural look.
I was also fortunate enough to try out six different eye shadow colors: Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color in Golden Vanilla, Truffle, Lavender Fog, Midnight Star, Sweet Plum and Black Pearl. The long-lasting mineral-based eye shadows add a lovely pop of color for a night out. They’re easy to apply, and you can really build up the color if you want to make a statement with a bold look.
One of my favorite looks utilizing the Mary Kay products looks a little something like this:
I’m wearing the Mineral Cheek Color in Shy Blush, the Lash Love™ Mascara in Black, the NouriShine Plus™ Lip Gloss in Café Au Lait, and the Mineral Eye Color in Lavender Fog and Sweet Plum.
I layered the Lavender Fog across my lid and used a compact brush to apply Sweet Plum densely along my lash line (almost like a thick eyeliner). I love the pop of purple on my lids for a twist on the smoky eye, and paired with the soft colors of the other makeup products, I feel fresh and pretty!
After sampling such a great assortment of products from the line, I am officially a fan of Mary Kay’s beauty items! Definitely take the chance to check them out for yourself and pick up a few products!
Oh nail polish, how I love you.
What strikes me as a bit funny is that up until a year or so ago, I would ONLY wear clear or light pink nail polish on my hands. I wasn’t a fan of dark or bright colored nail polishes. Well, I was missing out. At some point, a switch just happened to flip, and now I’m officially obsessed with nail color…nail art…you name it!
The Julep Maven boxes are definitely fueling the fire I have for more nail polish. I could NOT resist ordering a November box once I saw the offerings. November brought a collection of matte suede nail polishes in a variety of colors. I am normally an “American Beauty” style, but I changed it up for November by ordering the “It Girl” box. By the way: I LOVE that I can select the box of my choice…and there is the option to opt out of months if I’m not in the mood to purchase at the time.
One of the three polishes I received was Hailee – a khaki green suede polish (pictured above). I’m obsessed. It is perfect for the fall, and I love the matte finish. The other two polishes in my November Maven Box was Nora – a silver aubergine suede, and a matte top coat.
The Julep polishes have even made it on to Oprah’s Favorite Things list…and when Oprah likes something, that’s a good sign, right? I wouldn’t mind receiving that 12 bottle set for the holidays…
If you want to sign up to become a Julep Maven, I’ve got a deal for you! If you enter the code MAVEN50 when you sign up, you get 50% off your first box! With the holiday season coming up fast, you can keep the boxes in mind – they’d make a great gift (for yourself or for others…)!
Are you familiar with Julep nail polishes? How about the Julep Maven program? If you’re a fan of nail polish, this monthly subscription service might just be the one for you!
I recently received my very first Julep Maven box, and I was so excited to try out the products inside! When I took my style profile quiz, I found out that I was labeled as “American Beauty.” My box contained two nail polishes: Emma and Renee. It also included a 2oz bottle of The Best Pedi Cream Ever, which you apply to the tops and bottoms of your feet nightly to nourish and exfoliate. It smells great, and the texture is thin/easy to apply.
But on to the nail polishes. I combined them on top of one another for my current manicure:
For the base coat, I applied Renee, which is a lilac creme polish. I like that it hints toward a shade of grey, which I love for the fall. The top coat was Emma – a seashell pink shimmer. I love both of the colors by themselves, as well as paired together, which is a plus!
Since these polishes were my first experience with Julep polishes, I was very satisfied! Both shades glide on to the nail smoothly, and I was surprised that I was able to get a completely solid coat with Renee on the first try; no need for two coats!
I’m really looking forward to checking out what my future Julep Maven boxes will include! One thing I really like about the program is that you have the ability to skip months if you don’t like what is offered (or can’t afford to splurge on some new nail polishes). AND, if for some reason you prefer the offerings of another style profile, you are able to select that box to receive instead! I am glad that you get choices and aren’t pressured to purchase every single month unless you’re really wowed!
Are you a Julep Maven too? How do you like the program?
And…if you’d like to get signed up to be a Julep Maven, click here and do so now!!!
I am constantly amazed at how long my hair has grown over the past few years. Regardless of length, any hair style you sport will require its own set of maintenance and upkeep rituals.
When my hair was shorter and I visited the salon for regular trims every month and a half, I didn’t have to worry about my ends getting dried out and splitting. It was never an issue. However, now that my hair is oh so long, I am learning about the battles I have to endure with keeping my locks healthy and shiny. This usually means that I make an effort to condition my hair every day when I shower. But sometimes “regular strength” conditioner just doesn’t cut it. I’ve got to have something a bit stronger in power to fend off the hay-like dry texture at the ends of my hair.
Enter: Dove’s Intensive Repair Conditioner. I honestly am a big fan of Dove products when it comes to drug store beauty buys. Their lotions and shower gels that I have used in the past have been wonderful, so when I was able to try the new restorative conditioner, I had no doubt that I’d love this product as well.
The Intensive Repair Conditioner has fiber active technology that penetrates deep inside the hair strand, helping to rebind damaged proteins. It also has a patented Micromoisture Serum to target damage, repairing the surface of hair by sealing lifted cuticles. I like the sound of that!
So, let’s get down to the nitty gritty: did it work for me?
I have to say: I think it’s a solid product. When I use the Intensive Repair Conditioner, I can absolutely feel how sleek and moisturized my hair feels. I think that is one of my favorite things about intense conditioners like Dove’s – I can literally feel the difference upon rinsing my hair. It’s easier to comb through, and my hair looks shinier after I dry it (I think). Another plus for the Intensive Repair Conditioner is that you can use it daily! Some of the deep conditioners I’ve used in the past end up making my hair feel a little bit weighed down, but this one is light and can definitely be used daily if desired. I currently am using it 3-4 times a week, applying mostly to the ends of my hair, with just a small amount on the top of my locks.
In addition, for an extra kick of sleekness and shine, once a week I apply the Dove Intensive Repair Conditioner to my damp hair and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. I think you can REALLY tell the difference after that treatment! The picture above was taken right after my last treatment; my hair was definitely looking smooth and shiny that afternoon!
So, if you’re looking for a restorative conditioner to give you hair that extra boost of softness/shine, and to reduce the look of split ends, I would suggest you give the Dove Intensive Repair Conditioner a try! I’m officially a fan.
