“What if” Wednesdays: shopping regret

25 Jan

One of my favorite things about blogging is hearing from others; I love getting opinions, thoughts, and the like!

I thought it might be fun to pose some thought provoking (or, well…just random) questions every once in a while, and I want to hear your answers! Of course, I’ll be sharing mine as well!

So, let’s start:

What was the last thing you regret buying?

I almost hate to admit this, because it’s a piece of clothing. Typically, I have a 2 week rule when I purchase new clothing: if I don’t wear something in 2 weeks, I return it. However, I ran into some problems this year with the strange Florida winter. You see, it never did get cold here! Usually we experience cold weather that requires pants, boots, and coats…but in the past 2 months we have only had a very small number of those days. Heck…it was 80 degrees outside yesterday…in January! Something is wrong with this picture.

Anyway, in the fall I went shopping at GAP. They were selling some lovely, soft, stretchy corduroy leggings. The taupe color was calling my name, and the fit was spot on. I really wanted them, and they happened to be on sale. I couldn’t resist, and I was sure that I would need to wear them once the weather got a bit chilly (and they’d be a nice change from just wearing jeans with boots).

Well, time passed. The 2 week window went by, and I hadn’t worn them…but I gave them a special exception to the rule due to the weather. And guess what? The weather stayed in the 80s. Christmas came, and I was wearing a tank top outside! Ridiculous. It is now January and I haven’t had the opportunity to wear the darn things yet. I am SO mad at myself for breaking my 2 week rule, and now I’m filled with regret because I can’t return them. It isn’t that I don’t like the pants, because I do! It’s just that I don’t see many opportunities to don them coming up in the near future. I hope I still fit into them when that time does come around…I WILL wear them, dang it!

So tell me, what was the last thing YOU regret buying?

As long as the tags are still on them I’m pretty sure you can return. I’ve returned things to Banana Republic 6 months later. You can only get store credit, but it’s not like you won’t use it!

I thought perhaps they would (TJ Maxx and Marshalls would at least), but I read the receipt and it says that merchandise can only be returned up to a certain number of days after purchase, and it can’t be on final sale. These pants meet both of those criteria (they weren’t on final sale when I bought them but they are definitely gone from the stores now)…lol…

Sounds like you need to plan a trip to somewhere with colder weather, just for an excuse to wear those adorable leggings! :)

And I sort of regret buying two new pairs of jeans in early December. I knew I was on a diet, but I really wanted a few new pairs to wear over Christmas break. And now they’re getting pretty loose, so in the end I’ll only get a couple of months wear out of them. Oh well, at least they were only from American Eagle, and not super expensive!

Ah, I think you have a good point! Too bad I’d have to buy a coat to pair with the ensemble! Darn Florida…I don’t own things like that! ;)

I regret buying not one, but TWO pair of boots – exactly the same, but different colors – that hurt my feet so badly, I don’t wear them. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Argh! I hate when things like that happen :(

Pretty sure half the items in my closet fall into this category! I always buy something with the thought that it’d be great if I could just find the right _____ {wedge boot, boyfriend cardigan, shimmery tank, navy trouser pant, etc, etc, etc.} to go with it and then I’d have a perfect outfit. More often than not I don’t finish putting the ensemble together and have a bunch of hodge podge clothes.

I do the same thing!!! I just really need to put myself oh a shopping hiatus until i can meet certain criteria (got rid of x amount of items, unable to find something to pair with that item, etc). I need to make up the criteria so I can start purging more!

Purging your closet can be really therapeutic at times! I try to do it once a season or so…making sure I get rid of at least a few items to donate to Goodwill or to bring to consignment. I think it’s almost about that time for me to do it again…

Ah, I definitely do that too. However, I usually stick to my 2 week rule…I have only that amount of time to find a pairing or else it goes back! This is probably why I regret these pants so much!

The GOOD news is…if you get hit with freakish cold weather, you’ll be the only one in Florida that was smart enough to buy corduroys :) I always ultimately regret buying crap stuff…like cheap t-shirts from Old Navy, that I convinced myself that I need, only to get home and realize I have 72 other ones just like it…and I’m the WORST at returning, so I pretty much just never do it.

Ah, but they’re so cute! I think they’ll be worth the wait to wear them! I haven’t bought anything in forever so I don’t have a good thing to regret, but I know I’ve made my fair share of stupid purchases in the past!

I think you can at least exchange them for the value you paid, right? REturns there stink becuase they mail you the store credit… blech. However, I do love these and think you can roll the bottons up a bit and wear with a cute short-sleeve top even in the 80s. Don’t have regrets over this. :)
