Maxi dress: 3 ways {Natalie: Oh, For The Love Of Blog}
categories: Get the look, Guests
Hi Ruffles and Truffles readers! I’m so happy to be guest posting for Katie while she’s gone. My name is Natalie, and I usually blog over at Oh, For The Love Of Blog. I blog about a lot of different things in my life including my recent move to Costa Rica and ridiculous things that happen to me, and while I’m not a fashion blogger by any stretch of the imagination, I did participate in the 30 for 30 Remix Challenge a while back, and I really enjoyed it so I thought it might be fun to do an outfit post here on Ruffles and Truffles.
I was opposed to maxi dresses when they first started trending (most recently, not in the 70s), mostly because they always hit at an awkward place on my upper ankle, and I could never find one that looked right on me. I am not abnormally tall, but I think I might be just a bit taller than average at 5’7″, and I guess they are typically made for the “average height”. But then I found this beauty hanging all by itself at TJ Maxx while looking for glass pitchers (amazing how I wound up over by the clothes), and a love affair began.
I tried it on, and I absolutely loved the way that it fit. The top was super flattering, and it fell to just the right place. The material is a super soft jersey so it feels like I’m wearing pajamas all day, but it definitely doesn’t look that way! As I am currently still experiencing warm weather, on a typical day I would wear it as is above, maybe add some pretty bangles, which I sadly do not have with me on my tropical adventure, or some awesome wedges. The beauty of the maxi dress though, is that it can extend into chillier weather with some careful layering.
I love denim/chambray button downs; I have three in varying shades. I think they’re so versatile, and I’ve also been known to rock double denim. I added the belt for a pop of print and to keep my shape. I know some places are experiencing even colder weather, or some people may find this a little boring (I don’t, but to each their own), so I also thought I’d experiment with a BRIGHT color.
dress: TJ Maxx, button down: H&M, cardigan: Old Navy, belt: Charlotte Russe, shoes: TOMS
I like the contrast of the neon yellow with everything else going on-I think this would also look great with a pretty turquoise. In case you can’t tell what my shoes are like, here’s a close up:
The natural color and the crochet texture make them an MVP in my closet-not to mention they’re TOMS so they’re super comfortable. I have 4 pairs…and maybe a problem.
So tell me, do you like maxi dresses? What kind of layering pieces do you use to extend your clothes for warmer weather into the chillier months? And because maybe I want to feel better about myself, do you love TOMS too?

I haven’t dared myself to buy a maxi yet. At 5′, I feel like they’ll all look awkward and overwhelming on me. But I’d really like to try anyway! Just need to find the right one.
